Does my child need to speak French to apply to the Lycée?
Not in Kindergarten.
Our PreK, JK, and SK classes welcome children with no prior knowledge of French.
For entry into Grade 1, students must demonstrate sufficient French language skills to follow classroom instruction.
Applicants to Grades 2–12 must be able to speak, read, and write in French at a level appropriate for their grade.
All applicants from Grade 1 onward complete a French assessment as part of the admissions process.
What happens if my child joins the Lycée without speaking French in Kindergarten?
Children in PreK, JK, and SK are immersed in French throughout the day and acquire the language naturally through play, classroom activities, songs, stories, and interactions with their teachers and classmates.
Young children learn languages remarkably quickly, and every year we see students with no prior French experience become confident French speakers in a fully French educational environment.
When should we apply? Are there specific entry grades?
We welcome applications for all grade levels.
Applications for the following school year should be submitted by December 15. After this date, admissions continue on a rolling basis, subject to space availability.

We do not speak French. Is this a problem?
Not at all.
Many of our families do not speak French. All Lycée Français de Toronto teachers and staff are able to communicate with families in English, and all school communications are provided in both French and English.
Many of our students also speak a third language at home, and we are proud of the linguistic and cultural diversity of our community.
How will I help my child with homework if I do not speak French?
Homework at the Lycée Français de Toronto is designed to reinforce concepts that have already been taught and practiced in class. Students are not expected to learn new material independently at home.
In Primary School, students also have opportunities to complete homework at school under teacher supervision.
Do students receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) in addition to the French Baccalauréat?
No. LFT follows the curriculum of the French Ministry of Education and awards the French Baccalauréat or the Baccalauréat Français International (BFI).
The French Baccalauréat is internationally recognized and highly respected by universities across Canada, the United States, Europe, and around the world.

What are the advantages of the French curriculum?
The French curriculum is recognized worldwide for its academic rigor, strong foundations in mathematics, sciences, languages, and humanities, and its emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, and intellectual curiosity.
As part of the global AEFE network of French schools, LFT offers students an internationally recognized education that prepares them for university opportunities in Canada, the United States, France, and around the world.
Students benefit from a multilingual environment, developing strong proficiency in French and English while also studying additional languages. Beyond academics, the curriculum encourages open-mindedness, cultural awareness, creativity, and a global perspective.
Graduates leave LFT with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
Are all subjects taught in French?
LFT follows the curriculum of the French Ministry of Education.
Most subjects are taught in French by teachers accredited by the French Ministry of Education.
English is taught from PreK onward by Canadian teachers. Physical Education classes are taught in English from Grades 1 to 5, and the Performing Arts program is taught in English from PreK to grade 5.
Starting in Grade 6, students may choose to enroll in the Section Internationale Américaine (SIA), an enriched English-language program that includes advanced English language and literature studies as well as History-Geography instruction in English.
Starting in Grade 7, all students study Spanish through Grade 12.
How do you support new students? My child is worried about changing schools and making new friends.
Every year, LFT welcomes students from Toronto, elsewhere in Canada, and around the world.
Our dedicated Vie Scolaire/Student Life team works closely with new students to help them feel comfortable, build friendships, and become part of the community. Through orientation activities, ongoing support, and daily guidance, we strive to ensure a smooth and positive transition for every student.
Does LFT participate in sports competitions?
Yes.
LFT is a member of the Small School Athletic Federation (SSAF) and participates in soccer, basketball, track and field, cross-country, ball hockey and other competitions throughout the year.
Our students regularly achieve excellent results and have won numerous awards.
Secondary students also participate in competitions and tournaments organized through the AEFE network, giving them opportunities to compete with students from French schools across Canada, the United States, and beyond.
Do you offer extracurricular activities?
Yes.
LFT offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, music, theatre, academic enrichment, and special interest clubs. Click here to find out more.
Secondary students are also invited to participate in activities organized through the LFT Sports Association.
Is there a uniform?
No.
Students wear an LFT sports uniform only for Physical Education classes and field trips.
Is there a bus service?
Yes.
LFT operates four bus routes serving different areas of Toronto, with multiple pick-up and drop-off locations. Click here to see the bus routes.
Does LFT offer a lunch program?
Yes.
LFT offers a hot lunch service provided by Kids Cuisine Santé. Families may order meals in advance through the provider’s online platform.
Students may also choose to bring their own lunch.
